The OVGA stop as Aston Oaks produced some surprisingly good play on one of the OVGA’s toughest courses. Last year, the field played to an average net score of 79.5 and this year, the field came in at an average net score of 78.2. In 2007, only 3 players (Larry Redmond, Tom Camacho and John Davis) played to below net par and this year 10 players broke net par. All three flights produced a sub net par performance and players moved up into the standings on the Conquest Cup leaderboard with the Tour Championship looming next week.
In the Nicklaus Flight, Justin Bonomini climbed back to the top of the leaderboard, firing a even par 72 (net 68) to take a 1-shot victory over Joe Wieland (80-69). Darin DePew (78-70), Venkat Devireddy (82-70), Dave Johnson (83-71) and Larry Redmond (81-71) also put in scores under net par. Bonomini is not in the Conquest Cup playoffs meaning Joe Wieland takes top honors among playoff participants and moves to #1 overall in the Conquest Cup ranking. Seven players have a shot at the Conquest Cup in the Nicklaus Flight: Wieland, Johnson, DePew, Michael Bowen, Tom Camacho, Devireddy and Ed Thompson. With his victory, Haley moves into the driver’s seat for the Conquest Cup in the Palmer Flight, but 5 others also have shots to take home the cup. As a reminder, the OVGA Tour banquet will follow the Tour Championship at Elks Run…hence the $69 charge over the $59 green fee. Those players who have not picked up their event trophies from previous wins can do so following their rounds.
