For the first time in OVGA history, a woman has claimed the top honors in one of the three major flights. And because of that, we’ll flip the order in which we present the results.
A modified Stableford scoring format was used in which points were awarded based off of each hole’s net score. A Double Eagle was worth 8 points. Eagle earned 5 points. Birdie was worth 2 points and par was worth 1 point. Bogey earned 0 points. Double bogey and triple bogey/worse would subtract -1 and -3 points respectively.
In the Hogan Flight, John Mentzel had the lead through 9 holes with 9 points, but it was the back nine that saw history made. Debby Lakes scored 18 points on the back 9 to rack up an event high 26 points and finish 8 points ahead of Eric VonBerg and become the first female winner in OVGA history. Phyllis Bare previously had the best finish by a woman with a 2nd place finish at Deer Run on July 20.
In the Palmer Flight, Mike Greivenkamp made the turn with 15 points, putting him in the lead by 3 points over Charles Felts. But neither Greivenkamp or Felts would be able to hang with Larry Buskey on the back 9. Buskey racked up 14 points on the finishing nine to edge Greivenkamp by two points, 25-23.
In the Nicklaus Flight, Dave Johnson made the turn with 12 points and a 1-point lead over Joe Wieland and Rich Lakes. Johnson would only amass 5 points on the back and Lakes would grab 7 points to finish 2nd. Wieland’s par on the 18th hole gave him his 8th point on the back nine and yet another victory.
