This Week the OVGA is at Sharon Woods Golf Course for the third leg of the Great Parks Cup race, and this week’s Hole Of The Week is the hole everyone dreads, the par 4 3rd hole. Playing 460 yards from the blue tees, many people think it should be called a par 5. The addition of shorter white tees puts the hole at 395 yards, but it plays longer than that. The fairway begins to slope into a ditch at around 180 yards to the green. Players who hit a long enough shot into the fairway will often find themselves hitting an uphill approach from a downhill lie, The green is guarded front right by a deep bunker. Flanking each side of the fairway is a row of trees which will block an approach shot for longer hitters who miss the fairway. For shorter hitters, it’s simply a matter of hitting a 200+ yard shot over the same trees, then hopefully getting up and down for a par. Things don’t get much easier once on the putting surface. The green tilts severely from back to front. This is the number 1 hdcp hole and is routinely ranked among the toughest par 4s in the Cincinnati area.
