2008 East/West participantsThe OVGA East/West Cup

The Westside/Eastside rivalary is infamous in Cincinnati. One is home to places like Hyde Park and Indian Hill. The other is home to Cheviot and Dent. One is perceived as white-collar; the other blue-collar. One is home to Montgomery Inn; the other Skyline Chili and LaRosa's Pizza.

The OVGA has used this rivalry as the basis of its yearly Ryder Cup-esque Match Play event, the East/West Cup. This premier event brings together the best golfers in each flight of the East side versus those of the West side.

Grand Oak Hole 112009 will bring big changes to the East/West Cup. The event will be played at Grand Oak Golf Club in West Harrison, Indiana. This year, the event will be played over a span of two days. Day One will be 8 group matches similar the format of the previous two years. Day Two will be 16 individual matches. A total of 24 points will be available. As holders, the West will need 12 points to retain the Cup while the East will need 12.5 to regain the Cup. Criss Titschinger will clead the West for Captain Chris Blake. The East Captain is TBD as Michael Bowen had to turn down the invitation. Can the East continue the streak of the visting side winning? Will home turf finally be defended? Come out on July 11-12 and cheer your favorite team to victory.

The event has been played since 2004, the year of the first season of OVGA play. In that inagural year, the West claimed the first Cup victory with a 6.5-1.5 route at Friendly Meadows Golf Course. The following year, at Twin Run Golf Course, the East came through for a 5-3 victory to even the series. In 2006, the West took back the Cup with a 4.5-3.5 victory at the Grizzly at Kings Island in Mason.

The last two years have seen the event come down to one match. 2007's event at Aston Oaks Golf Club saw perhaps the most dramatic East/West Cup yet. The East got on top early, winning the first four matches. The West would make a stunning come back, winning matches 5, 6, and 8. The Cup came down to the result from match 7. On the 17th hole, the East was 1 up. After both East players picked up their marks without having the putt conceded, the hole was lost and the event went to the 18th hole all square. The hole would eventually be halved, meaning the match would be halved and the East would prevail 4.5 to 3.5.

2008's event at Stonelick Hills Golf Club saw more of the same drama. A surprisingly large number of golfers found the water on the par 3 3rd. In the end, it came down to the match of Larry Redmond and Nick Francis of the East versus Curt Wuellner and Greg Amend of the West at #18. The West lead 1 up coming into 18, but would need to win or halve the hole to take the cup. After reaching the green in 2, the East needed a miracle, and it almost came via a eagle chip by Larry Redmond that barely missed the mark. Wuellner/Amend would make their eagle putt to seal the deal for the West 4.5 to 3.5.

Interesting facts about the Cup:
  • The home team has STILL never won
  • Each squad has 16 players.
    • The top four players from the Nicklaus, Palmer, and Hogan flights automatically qualify. (12)
    • The Captain is then alloted one "Captain's pick" from each flight. (3)
    • Finally, one "wild card" pick from any flight is allowed. (1)
  • The format of the matches from 2004-2008 was the following:
    • Holes 1-6 are Fourball (Better Ball).
    • Holes 7-12 are Foursome (Alternate Shot).
    • Holes 13-18, if necessary, are played in Scramble format.
    • The holders of the Cup needed 4 points to retain the cup. The opponents had to obtain 4.5 points to regain the cup.
